Riverside Family Medicine Residency, founded in 1971, is one of the oldest family medicine programs in the country. Our emphasis on information technology allows us to provide the highest quality care for our patients and the greatest access to evidence-based knowledge for our residents. A high faculty-to-resident ratio allows residents independence to manage their own patients and creates a great teaching environment to learn patient care. Our strong collegial atmosphere is a unique trademark of the Riverside Family Medicine Residency Program. We continue to be committed to producing the finest family medicine physicians in the nation.

Riverside Family Medicine Residency is sponsored by Riverside Regional Medical Center.  We are affiliated with Virginia Commonwealth University and Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. We are located in beautiful, historic Newport News, Virginia.

KEY PROGRAM FEATURES
  • 12 family medicine residents per year.
  • 11 family medicine faculty members, with three holding CAQs in OB or sports medicine.  One is the Director of Medical Informatics for the Health System.
  • Live Electronic Medical Record since 1997, with access from hospital, home, and wireless office.
  • Over 100 sub-specialist community faculty members providing one on one teaching.
  • Internet access throughout the office and hospital allows access to patient information, textbooks and journals from around the world.
  • PDA interface in the hospital allows uploading of patient lists and clinical information.
  • Onsite behaviorist.
  • Diverse patient population including active OB and pediatrics.
  • Developer of Comp-E-Val, the web-based, competency-based family medicine evaluation tool, now provided by the American Board of Family Medicine.
  • Sports Medicine affiliations with The College of William & Mary and Christopher Newport University.
